Closer to a lightened India Pale Ale with its wood-spiced bittering lingering across advertised lemon-peeled grains of paradise fruiting. Subsequent white-peppered Belgian-like candi-sugaring and minor herbal nuances bring further peculiarities to emboldened medium-bodied seasonal.
Understated straw-hazed pearly-headed summer ale (known previously as tap-only Eugene City Tracktown Honey Orange) brings subtle candi-sugared fruiting and herbal spicing to paper-thin oats spine. Mild wildflower-honeyed orange peel, lemon meringue, coriander, chamomile and menthol adjuncts brighten salty peppered grassy hop stead. Tertiary watermelon-soured tartness and tranquil lime spritz complete sunny light-bodied mood.
On tap, lemon zest, orange juice, and banana-clove burst forth alongside advertised grains of paradise tropicalia, satiating creamy crystal malting. Mango, peach, and tangerine make nice cameos.
Impossibly clear pinkish amber hue proves even lighter and more transparent than soft-toned session beer itself. Faint orange dryness and distant grassy-hopped bittering coerce washed-out beet-sugared strawberry-melon-apricot astringency. Subtle pale-malted Pac Mac yeast influx doesn’t suffice and vacuous citric-soured finish leaves slight metallic twinge. Sadly, summer retreat ain’t nearly ‘wacky’ enough re-tweaking Magic Hat’s equally pallid beet-crazy precursor Kerouac Ale.
Strangely herbaceous floral-spiced citric nature and raw oat dryness give bright saffron-hazed wheat ale similar resilience as earthen Belgian Farmhouse Ales. So does mildewed fungi retrenchment, tertiary lemongrass-peppercorn influence, mild grapefruit bittering, and wispy banana-clove snip. Biscuit-y bottom anchors finishing lemon, lime, and orange candy tartness.
Simply elegant fruited beauty with tarried berry entry, sticky caramel malting, fragrant floral bouquet and mild orange peel zest. Pleasant water flow and soft hop bittering lighter than most British pales, comparing favorably to a more intimate Samuel Smith IPA., perhaps.
