NARRAGANSETT AUTOCRAT COFFEE MILK STOUT

On tap at 1249 Wine Bar, limited edition 2014 medium body combines Natty’s bittersweet milk stout with Autocrat dark-roasted coffee. Brusque hop-charred coffee bittering cuts thru barley-roasted black chocolate easement. Espresso, cappuccino and latte undertones pick up lactic sugaring. Bottled version: creamily bittersweet coffee roast loses luster by arid mocha finish. Fudgy black chocolate, dark cocoa, vanilla, espresso, cappuccino and mocha latte illusions fade in the distance.

GOOSE ISLAND BOURBON COUNTY BRAND COFFEE STOUT

On tap at Pony Bar, terrific easy drinkin’ full body allows dark chocolate, dry bourbon and frothy espresso to register near the same high plain as the black coffee overtones. Tasting a bit like Madagascar coffee, its Intelligentia La Tortuga beans truly are heavenly. Fudgy molasses-sugared chocolate caking sweetens the sensationally serene java bittering and sedate fusel alcohol burn. Tertiary toasted coconut, mocha latte, bourbon vanilla and bruised black cherry illusions round out the rich mocha prevalence.

HARDYWOOD SIDAMO COFFEE STOUT

By scattering loads of expressive Ethiopian coffee (from local Lamplighter shop) atop serene caramel-malted milk chocolate creaminess, full-bodied Russian Imperial retains soothing approachability and really stands out. Rich roasted coffee bean bittering picks up quickly descending blueberry puree initiation. Dark-spiced dried cocoa, molasses, toffee and hazelnut undertones suffice.

GREAT RIVER REDBAND STOUT WITH COFFEE

Marvelously mellow espresso-beaned stout so soft and creamy it’s got to be a godsend. Prodigious Jamaican roast coffee theme soars above milky black chocolate backdrop where pithy cocoa, vanilla and hazelnut illusions lurk. After a few sips, distant black-peppered jalapeno heat creeps into resilient green coffee bean extraction. Mild enough for softies but rich enough for mocha lovers. Arguably the best canned dark ale from America.
