UNIBROUE TERRIBLE DARK ALE

Noticeably darker than most Uni’s, this cocoa-headed, cascade-beaded, ruby-highlighted, brown-clouded dry body spreads lavender-rosemary fragrance above dried orange regalia, desolate prune-fig-pomegranate souring and latent coffee-roasted bite. Apple-grape-cherry-pear spree galvanizes diluted sherry-rum finish as metallic alcohol whir sullenly looms through bomber-bottled Belgian-styled strong ale.

(VAN DIEST) FRULI STRAWBERRY WHITE BEER

Brewed in Belgium for England’s Van Diest company, cream-centered unfiltered wheat beer surges forth with natural nectar juicing. Easy flowing spring water nicety receives sterling hop softening as massively sweet-tart strawberry rasp covers nose, tongue, and throat. Strong fructose zest continues unfettered as lively cranberry tartness and orange-peeled coriander spicing subsume sticky malt sass.

(VOODOO) WYNONA’S BIG BROWN ALE

Taking its name from Primus’ ode to actress Wynona Ryder’s hairy beaver, this complex brown ale puts most competition to shame. Cocoa-powdered Belgian chocolate malting leans against spicy Amarillo hops as increased prune-raisin-fig souring and dry hazelnut-macadamia-almond pertinence receive candy-glazed sweetness. Oaken vanilla, ashy cedar, and burgundy illusions secure busy backdrop.

WEYERBACHER HERESY IMPERIAL STOUT

Immensely complex oak-aged Old Heathen dry stout (with maroon-highlighted deep mahogany hue) scatters bittersweet black chocolate urging across charred hop frontage as tannic grape-soured cherry tartness infiltrates Black Forest cake illusion. Further sips reveal sherry-port kick at lingering lacquered vanilla finish, though stabilized aftertaste recalls marshmallow-imbued chocolate liqueur. Updated 2013 version ‘aged in whiskey barrels’ brought deeper wood-smoked bourbon tenacity to oaken cherry and tannic grape pucker – overriding chalky mocha thrust.
