(CATAMOUNT) POST ROAD PUMPKIN ALE

January 1, 2009Beers A-Zpumpkin aleJohn Fortunato

Weary caramel-hued fizzy-headed medium-bodied autumnal needs richer pumpkin pie essence and spicier nutmeg to be more compelling than peculiar. Watery consistency, wavered grain mesh, and slumping clove-cinnamon jab also weaken flow. It took Brooklyn Brewery (which purchased Post Road Brewery) to pull off idealistic flavoring. Brewery defunct: 2002.

POST ROAD PALE ALE

January 1, 2009Beers A-Zpale aleJohn Fortunato

Delightful amber-hued dry-hopped bitter with lusty maple thickness complementing barley-sweet honey-roasted candy malts. Subtle cinnamon-spiced berry adjuncts warm complex finish. Brewery defunct: 2000.

(CATAMOUNT) POST ROAD INDIA PALE ALE

January 1, 2009Beers A-Zindia pale aleJohn Fortunato

Fruited malt subtleties, creamy caramel incline, and barley-enriched bottom put this closer to a brown ale. Dry mocha and blanched nuttiness fade into lingering bitter grain finish. Brewery defunct: 2002.

PORT ROYAL EXPORT PILSENER

January 1, 2009Beers A-Zlight pilsnerJohn Fortunato

Foamy Bavarian-styled pils with smoked barleymalts bearing down on bitter hop opening. Delicate cocoa tones provide shadowy mocha presence to moderate citric finish.

PORTLAND ZIG ZAG RIVER LAGER

January 1, 2009Beers A-Zpale lagerJohn Fortunato

Glaring barleymalt dryness combines with soft hop bitterness for perfunctory Northwest lager. Zesty fruitiness and mint backdrop can’t help watery, flat, bland, inorganic finish.

PORTLAND WOODSTOCK I.P.A.

January 1, 2009Beers A-Zindia pale aleJohn Fortunato

Dewy grains, billowed oats, and citric hops caress woody cherry-pine undercurrent of well-defined India Pale Ale. Lean finish relies on smoked barley dryness and fruity nuttiness.

PORTLAND THUNDERHEAD CREAM STOUT

January 1, 2009Beers A-Zcream stoutJohn Fortunato

Composed mahogany-hued dank-scented cream stout consumed by soft-watered chocolate-roasted barleymalts. Though not as creamy as outstanding high-level competition, bitter cocoa and rich hazelnut fulfill desired milder template.

PORTLAND HONEY LAGER

January 1, 2009Beers A-Zamber lagerJohn Fortunato

Simple grain mesh and hop-fueled carbonation hide honey tones of jaundiced lager. Too plain, undefined, and second rate compared to J.W. Dundee’s Honey Brown.

PORTLAND HAYSTACK BLACK PORTER

January 1, 2009Beers A-Zcoffee porterJohn Fortunato

Espresso coffee-flavored porter with slim cocoa bitterness, musty fruit odor, and thick mocha spicing maintains creamy froth but lacks hearty porter strength. Aromatic charred hops merge dissipating dark chocolate and licorice illusions before espresso finish gains syrupy maple undertone.

PORTLAND BOBBY DAZZLER HOLIDAY ALE

January 1, 2009Beers A-Zwinter aleJohn Fortunato

Transient frothy-headed amber-deepened ‘Old London Style’  fireside sipping winter ale lacks advertised richness. However, aromatic butternut sweetness, spicy hop bitterness, orange peel souring and sticky pine sap bottom fortify caramel-chocolate insurgence just fine.

PORT WIPE OUT I.P.A.

January 1, 2009Beers A-Zindia pale aleJohn Fortunato

Alluring burnt sienna-hued India Pale Ale as enjoyable as rival California brewer Alesmith’s equivalent. Spice-sweetened peach-pear-apple promenade laminates resinous piney hops and floral-daubed spruce stickiness. Honeyed oats rampage creamy molasses malting to tangy orange-grapefruit finish. Heavy yeast sediment coats glass bottom.

PORT OLD VISCOSITY ALE

January 1, 2009Beers A-Zold aleJohn Fortunato

Irresistible mahogany-bodied bourbon-barrel aged ale brings smoked cedar aromatics to pertinent lactose chocolate malting and creamy cacao liqueur stickiness. Frothy nature increases as fudge-y center thickens, allowing sherry, port, and cherry puree notes to emerge above black licorice blotch.
