(WYCHWOOD) FIDDLER’S ELBOW PALE ALE

January 1, 2009Beers A-Zpale aleJohn Fortunato

Sweet single malt Scotch essence and barley-wheat conflux given bitter hop ambling. Creamy butterscotch insistence rises above slightest citrus hint by astringent finish for perfectly obvious Brit.

(WYCHWOOD) DUCHY ORIGINAL ORGANIC ENGLISH ALE

January 1, 2009Beers A-ZesbJohn Fortunato

Earthen mineral-grained copper-hazed organic ale brings dry Scotch malting, tobacco-tinged barley roast, and wafted breadcrumb sniff to blanched resin hop stead. Herbal tea midst locates slimmest citrus, quince, and sherry illusions above walnut singe. ’09 re-tasting brought butterscotch frontage to burnt orange backdrop.

WYCHWOOD BAH HUMBUG! CHRISTMAS ALE

January 1, 2009Beers A-Zwinter aleJohn Fortunato

Under-whelming light-bodied bum-out deserves dissenting holiday moniker as sullen metallic-hopped cinnamon-gingerbread-vanilla vagary disrupts astringent nuttiness, skimpy fruitcake whimper, and styptic pumpkin-banana snipe. On tap, candi-sugared fig-plum vibe grows stronger above peppered hops.

WYATT’S WILD AGAVE BEER

January 1, 2009Beers A-Zspice aleJohn Fortunato

Aromatic aftershave lotioning, peppery hop nose, and blue agave-spiced eucalyptus tongue climax with mint-y freshness. Initial peculiarities give way after a few sips, leaving an excessively cloy ginger-sugared finish. Pour slowly to correctly balance agave with sharp tequila twist.

WURZBURGER JULIUS ECHTER HEFE-WEISS DUNKEL

January 1, 2009Beers A-Zdark wheatJohn Fortunato

Thin, watery, turbidly rust-hued Bavarian dark ale lacks expected richness, settling for mere chocolate dip recession and prune-dried barleywine trickle. Grape esters waft through fig-raisin dissipation and teensy orange-kumquat stint.

WURZBURGER HOFBRAU PREMIUM BAVARIAN PILSNER

January 1, 2009Beers A-Zlight pilsnerJohn Fortunato

Insignificant musty hop-wafted, white fluffy-headed, light-bodied pilsner with dank yeast bitterness reminiscent of Holland brews such as Heineken or Peter’s Brand Pilsener. Flat carbonation, trifling citric souring, and watery flow don’t help. Bavarian? No. Closer to a bad white ale, perhaps. Try Killian’s version instead.

WURZBURGER HOFBRAU BAVARIAN HOLIDAY BEER

January 1, 2009Beers A-Zwinter aleJohn Fortunato

Tantalizing brown-hazed beige-headed Bavarian (a.k.a. Festbier) placates rich wheat frontage with heavier candi-sugared yeast sinew than most spicy holiday brews. Caramelized barleymalts linger to softened prune finish, providing delicate tone redolent of a brown ale.

WURZBURGER HOFBRAU BAVARIAN DARK BEER

January 1, 2009Beers A-Zdark lagerJohn Fortunato

Sweet flowery-scented Bavarian receives medicinal honey-coated coughdrop sweetness complementing cherry soda creaminess. Though well rounded and well-hopped, mellow barley-roasted finish subsides too quickly.

WURZBURGER HOFBRAU PREMIUM PILSNER

January 1, 2009Beers A-Zlight pilsnerJohn Fortunato

Though first bottle consumed was imported by estimable Killian Company, rich copper-hued biscuit-y wheat German brew maintained distinction. Zesty yellow fruiting, animated spice-hopped sop, and sweet barley roast lingered to lemony mineral-grained finish. Original Bavarian version brought richer barley malting to spicier lemon bittering.

WOODSTOCK INN RED RACK ALE

January 1, 2009Beers A-Zred aleJohn Fortunato

Choice rocky tan-headed translucent amber red ale alternates barley-toasted caramel-honeyed wheat alacrity with dry Scotch acridity, picking up slick roasted chocolate-almond traction above earthen mineral grain fortress. Further sips reveal buttery biscuit drift, red grape chasm, and brief barleywine vamp.

WOODSTOCK INN PIG’S EAR BROWN ALE

January 1, 2009Beers A-Zbrown aleJohn Fortunato

Auburn-hued dry-hopped moderate body carries diffuse mocha-prune sourness and relegated Baker’s chocolate parch to equally sparse nutty rye center. Peanut-shelled Brazil nut, walnut and cola nut soaping nips dark-spiced perfume hops. Dewy earthiness insulates sweet brown tea finish.

WOODSTOCK INN LOON GOLDEN ALE

January 1, 2009Beers A-Zgolden aleJohn Fortunato

Easygoing dry orange smattering confronts sedated yeast-sugared honeyed butterscotch linger. Backend blends cork-y aridness with earthy wildflower and bitter grapefruit notes.
