Pungent Czech-styled pils brings raw-grained barnyard rusticity and sharp Saaz-hopped bittering to the fore as musky lemon rot souring increases over buttered biscuit malt base. Tertiary lemongrass herbage and minor straw grass acridity waver. Clean mineral water crisping battles back astringent ethyl alcohol burn. A must-have for heartier pilsner thirsts.

On tap at Ambulance, yellow-fruited German pils utilizes herbal citric-spiced Santiam hop oiling to moderately embitter brusque grain musk. Wood-toned lemony grapefruit tang spreads across grassy earthen dew, botanical floral-perfumed wisp and musty vegetal snip. Not far removed from a light summertime India Pale Ale.

Gritty straw-hued Czech-styled pils has got some bite to it. Pungent raw-grained astringency and grassy hopped bittering picks up sharp yellow-fruited spicing above crystal-malted sweetness. Subtle floral-perfumed grapefruit, lemon and peach notions linger softly.     

Moderate German-styled pilsner (in a can) picks up shady blueberry-soured respite for polite lemon seltzer spritz, mild raw-grained grassy hop bittering and wispy herbal nip. Minor phenol astringency never depletes lemony blueberry tartness.

On tap at Ambulance, likable Czech pilsner offers raw grained pungency, grassy hop freshness and cracker-like bread crusting to crisp citric spicing. Mild lemon-sugared sweetness counters light phenolic acidity.

On tap at Ambulance, pungently embittered straw-cleared Czech-styled pilsner brings dry Noble hop herbage to balmy grapefruit-orange-lemon sequence above soft oats-flaked pilsner malt base. Alkaline-like alcohol acidity intensifies musty raw-grained pungency. Light pilsner fans may be put-off by ruggedly coarse scour.

On tap at Ambulance, initial sips indicated a diffident German pilsner with saison traits such as musky lemon-rotted tartness, light floral-backed lemongrass herbage and grassy hop moisting. But second tasting revealed crisply clean “hoppy” pilsner’s IPA-like tropical fruiting (grapefruit, orange, mango, peach) and brisk piney hop sharpness. Dry wood tones add astringency and grouty minerality underlines citric perfuming.

Sessionably soft summertime suds serenades subtle citrus spicing with floral Belma hops and reedy wood tones. Brisk grapefruit, pineapple and tangerine tang sweetened by honeyed carapils malting. Cardboard-like backdrop picks up pasty residue.

Desiccated pilsner-malted light body brings German lager yeast to short-lived lemony apricot spritz, raw-honeyed sourdough breading, acrid maize parch and musty straw-hay musk. Pallid dullness.

On tap at Taphouse Grille, crisply soft-tongued German pils-styled moderation allows delicate honeyed biscuit malting and spicy hop tingle to get watery by musky vegetal midst. Resigned cereal grain finish lacks luster.

Enjoyable 2013 pilsner-styled pale lager (a.k.a. Champagne Velvet) celebrates Upland’s 15th anniversary with homage to Indiana’s ‘most beloved beer’ from defunct Terre Haute Brewery. Clear-yellowed German pils brings corn-sugared cereal graining to crisp lemon-soured spritz, mild grassy hop bittering and buttery pale malt toastiness. Musky yeast pungency reminiscent of Heineken.
