CHAPEAU MIRABELLE LAMBIC
Plum juice-flavored lambic retains white grape dryness, mildly tart citric fruiting, and bottom heavy sediment. Sharp carbonation doesn’t overwhelm accentuating sour green apple mist. A fine alternative to hard cider and near the top of the ‘fruit’ class.
(CHICAGO’S) LEGACY RED ALE
Nearly unscented, brownish so-called ‘Legacy’ has cheerful red ale nuances (peppy hops, roasted malts, cracked wheat) countering minor sour fruiting. But second-rate finish lacks fortitude. Brewery defunct: 2002.
CHRISTIAN MOERLEIN SELECT LAGER
Simply combines toasted oats, roasted barley, and sweet wheat in subtly hopped mild manner consistent with brewers’ finer Honey Almond Lager. Unassumingly rewarding.
CISCO WINTER VINTAGE NANTUCKET LAGER
Middling hazy yellowed amber moderation retains soft-bubbled white head and sunny lemon dryness. Herbal tinge bedecks wheat backbone sufficiently.
(CLIPPER CITY) PEG LEG IMPERIAL STOUT
Opaque mahogany stout commences with black chocolate souring complementing coffee-roasted espresso, cocoa, and molasses bitterness. Black currant, bruised cherry, and black licorice coat wood-dried recess bracing mellow Merlot-port luster.
COLD SPRING BLACKBERRY BRAMBLE ALE
Blackberry added to rich malted grain roast and pure spring water for bold initiation, but processed, ambiguous, derivative nature precludes punctual wheat essence by indistinct finish. Softly sweet raspberry-boysenberry nuance dribbles forth with veiled tartness.
COOPERS BLACK CROW FILTERED ALE
Satiable clear auburn ale with pleasant malt-roasted brown chocolate overtones and brittle banana wisp goes down smooth. Though fizzy carbonation nearly overwhelms, polite caramel notes fill out earthen grain backdrop, retaining only some up-front thickness. Down Under brew will ease amateurs and captivate veteran drinkers.
CORAL CERVEJA
Fresh tobacco aroma and lemony hop spritz introduce light-bodied pilsner. Subdued smoked spices echo across lingered butterscotch range.
(CRESTED BUTTE) RODEO OATMEAL STOUT
Strong oatmeal waft enhances coffee-stained chocolate malted stout. Punctual mocha affluence strengthens lingering cherry wood backdrop, adding depth to roasted barley-oats finish. It’s got some kick, too! Brewery defunct: 2007.
(CROPTON) CROPTON’S CALAMITY ALE
Sharpshooter Calamity Jane pictured on label of cascade-hopped smoothie also known as Uncle Sam’s Bitter. Easing whiskey malt opening briskly enjoins sweet and sour yeast resonation, but astringent bitterness depletes some moderate-bodied character.
(DARK HORSE) THIRSTY TROUT PORTER
Creamy Baltic-styled dry-bodied ebony porter offers deep burnt coffee bitterness to milky vanilla-chocolate richness, accruing black licorice snip to woody bottom. Dissipated chicory-espresso finish picks up chestnut-roasted barley toasting overwhelming luscious butterscotch snippet beneath surface.
