PENNICHUCK BACKDRAFT CHOCOLATE PORTER

January 1, 2009Beers A-Zmocha porterJohn Fortunato

On tap, milk chocolate-y creme de cocoa frontage emboldens charred barley-oats bottom. In the midst, vanilla sweetness counters espresso bitterness as well as minor wood sear. Residual oiliness disrupts mocha finish a tad. Brewery defunct: 2010.

PENN ST. NIKOLAUS BOCK

January 1, 2009Beers A-ZbockJohn Fortunato

Inferior coppery orange bock blunts initial wood chip smokiness, charred hop promise, and sticky tobacco residue for undefined X-mas seasoning. Dried prune, red grape, and bruised orange undertones flatten dull finish.

PENN PILSNER

January 1, 2009Beers A-Zlight pilsnerJohn Fortunato

Ambiguous clear-toned rocky-headed Vienna-styled pilsner with barest wheat foundation lacks sufficient body. Musty malt dirge and dulled butterscotch-honeyed midst pick up candied sugar, perfumed citrus and gingerbread hints to watered down finish.

PENN OKTOBERFEST LAGER

January 1, 2009Beers A-ZoktoberfestJohn Fortunato

PENN WEIZEN

January 1, 2009Beers A-ZhefeweissJohn Fortunato

Obvious banana-clove surge retains herbal fragrance and lemony mandarin orange crisping to smoked wheat backbone for viscous copper-hazed German knockoff. Soured grapefruit-peach tartness and peppery cinnamon-spearmint spicing bring hard-candied inertia to watered down finish.

PENN GOLD LAGER

January 1, 2009Beers A-Zhelles lagerJohn Fortunato

Translucent gold pearly-headed Munich-styled helles lager tucks grapefruit-soured lemon rind bittering below abrupt husked wheat dalliance. Green apple cameo mired by cloying malt complacency and high acidity.

PELICAN TSUNAMI STOUT

January 1, 2009Beers A-Zmilk stoutJohn Fortunato

Dry mahogany-hued ruby-highlighted milk stout retains bittersweet dark chocolate stickiness, overripe black cherry whirl, and thick lactose tag. Roasted coffee bean, toasted oats, and hazelnut offer sullen sequel for excellent nightcap.

PELICAN PILSNER

January 1, 2009Beers A-Zlight pilsnerJohn Fortunato

Extinct fruit-centric hop-spiced golden pils retained billowy white head and went down smooth as delicate wheat-barley fabric maintained pleasant moderate restraint.

PELICAN MAC PELICAN’S SCOTTISH STYLE ALE

January 1, 2009Beers A-Zscottish aleJohn Fortunato

Mild bone-dry Scot knockoff plies subtle sour fruit palate (embodying apricot, quince, and orange rind) to earthen grained vegetative undertow. Frazzled hop-fizz thaws crystal-pale malt influence.

PELICAN KIWANDA CREAM ALE

January 1, 2009Beers A-Zcream aleJohn Fortunato

Protracted citric hop simmer given subtle lemon fizz, floral peach-pear ebb, and quince hint. Washed-out faint bitterness and soft water flow lighten dry wheat-grass chaff to doughy finish. Despite lack of reputed creaminess, no negative traits disrupt this undistinguished middleweight.

PELICAN INDIA PELICAN ALE

January 1, 2009Beers A-Zindia pale aleJohn Fortunato

Terrific floral hop nose informs smoked spruce-cedar wood tones while sweet yeast persistence echoes through crystal-pale malt median. Citric pineapple, grapefruit, and orange pith add tangy backend. Dryly bitter rosewood finish retains alcoholic luster for well-balanced, full-bodied golden-orange IPA.
