DOVER, DELAWARE

Inside a refurbished wood-ensconced Victorian building next to the courthouse in downtown Dover, GREY FOX GRILLE & PUBLIC HOUSE opened for biz in the fall of 2015. Boasting ‘upscale dining and relaxed attitude,’ the friendly pub retains a quaint speakeasy feel reinforced by topnotch pub fare.

Grey Fox’s wood-shined central bar features 16-plus taps, sundry wine selections and a brick-faced emblem. A fireplace adds warmth to the right side dining and upstairs seating offers lounge-y privacy to the pristine pub.

My wife and I plus dog Roscoe grab a table at the plank-floored, umbrella-covered back patio early July ’19 to eat crab cakes and a steak sandwich while soaking up a sampler of beers crafted by nearby Fordham & Dominion Brewing.

While I’d previously quaffed Dominion Double D Double IPA, Dominion Candi Belgian Tripel and Dominion Oak Barrel Stout, both Fordham Midnight Blue Gose and Fordham Gypsy Lager were new to me. (All reviews in Beer Index).

A fine family-oriented local hideaway well worth exploring while journeying thru northern Delaware’s still-growing brewpub scene.

Bold hop-forward milk stout loads tarry caramel-burnt dark chocolate malting with dark-roast hop char and leathery wood burnt charcoal bittering. Raw molasses, milked espresso, tart black cherry and cocoa nibs illusions thicken black patent-malted mocha resolve.

On tap at Seven Lakes Station, sharp yellow grapefruit bittering gains sour passionfruit yogurt milking, subtle dank pine resin pungency and dainty white-peppered spicing over grassy spelt-oats base. ‘Melon salad’ midst relays Citra/ Idaho 7/Vic Secret-hopped honeydew, cantaloupe, mango and pineapple tanginess to acidic citrus souring.

Frail skinny-canned aluminum yellowed dry body with delicate white webbed lace stays unassumingly vapid. Meager corn-starched lemon licks, wispy mandarin orange smidge and distant vegetal nuance remain barren over white-breaded pilsner malting.

Tart red raspberry entry gains lightly coriander-spiced Himalayan sea salting and lemon-squinted cranberry pucker to reinforce its lactic sour edge above a dry white wheat bed. But its mildly pungent washed-out raspberry finish flattens.

Dry sea-salted coriander tartness and tangy lemon-limed zing rig refreshingly crisp and mildly acidic light-bodied gose. Perhaps too unassuming at briny seltzer-watered citrus finish. Easy drinkin’ summertime fodder too evaporatively desolate taste-wise for bolder thirsts.

An essential part of Williamsburg’s Renaissance, BROOKLYN BREWERY is located alongside Brooklyn Bowl and one block down from Mc Carren Park in the heart of hipsterville.

Opened during 1988 and gaining tremendous exposure from world renowned brewmeister, Garrett Oliver, Brooklyn Brewery makes one of the finest lagers ever invented – for starters.

During July ’19 on a sweltering Friday evening before my High Times softball game, I got to once again peruse the mighty warehoused pub. Inside a rustic brick-walled space with several community tables and a 30-seat U-shaped wood-top bar with silver mash frontage, this large watering hole features multiple draught taps. A makeshift stage area with colorfully painted mural fills the far left bar area.

Tonight, I grab the four-sampler package with previously untried suds (Petite IPA, Come As You Weary English Dark Mild, 1,001 Nights Saison and Stonewall Inn IPA) alongside a pint of complex Sherry-aged cocktail-styled barleywine, Capataz. All are reviewed at Beer Index.
