DEVIL MOUNTAIN SUMMER WHEAT BEER
Supposedly made from “adventurous recipe,” spry reddish golden mini-wheat maintains easygoing citric hop flow and gently spicy lemony backdrop. Brewery defunct: 2000.
DOCK STREET AMBER ALE
Unassuming floral aroma, pleasant citric hop bite, and vague caramel malt sweetness become indistinct. Not a serious contender, but inoffensive.
DOGFISH HEAD IMMORT ALE ‘X’
Outstanding oak-barreled version of ‘luscious and complex’ full-bodied Immort Ale may be most flavorful 11% alcohol drink available. Syrupy malts invoke heavy maple sapping blitzing bruised orange, overripe cherry, and stewed prune thickness. Overpowering Band-Aid aroma picks up peppery spicing and juicy red apple-pear smoothing before sugary chocolate creaminess scampers to eternal yeast-lacquered finish.
DOGFISH HEAD 60 MINUTE INDIA PALE ALE
Acute bottle conditioned golden-bronzed East Coast IPA directly counters floral perfumed brandy wine nose, dry-spiced citric zest and pine-needled hop resin against peach-honeyed apricot-tangerine-melon tang. Sharp grapefruit-peeled orange rind bittering contrasts ancillary orange-candied pineapple-mango-guava tropicalia. Slim burnt cedar edge buttresses sticky pale malt sinew, enhancing the massive fruity nature. Its robust assertiveness and rich flavor profile expanded the palates of many future zymurgists.
DOMINION OCTOBERFEST SPECIALTY LAGER
Reliant more on candi-sugared barley toasting than expected autumnal Bavarian marking, sweetish soft-toned German knockoff may be enjoyable, but it’s not memorable. Spiced orange peel and earthen rye encumbered by unappealing acidity.
(DU BOCQ) KNIGHT’S ALE
Smoky turbidity, dry rye breading, and crystalline malting provide up-front allure to double fermented butterscotch-scented ale. Smoothly textured melange of floral citrus, sweet honey, clove, and mint adjuncts lead to prune finish buttery enough to attract American pilsner fans ready for a spicy change-up.
J.W. DUNDEE’S PORTER
Dried-out chocolate mustiness, harsh walnut-hazelnut astringency, dismal burnt caramel resignation, and latent black coffee scud thaw initial frothy mocha rigor of lactic brown-bodied deficiency. Earthen peat, charred wood, and black tar backend roasted barley-hop sear.
EDELWEISS HEFETRUB WEISBIER
Light amber-hued white fluffy-headed wheat brew with watery up-front flow gains momentum mid-palate when subtle barley, unspecific spices, and aromatic floral hops settle in. Yet it’s too polite to be a serious contender.
EGER URBIER
Not only could you smell the skunked malt pungency of this harvest gold pilsner at a distance but its musty washed-out finish also mires effectiveness. Subtle mocha pleasantries and burnt caramel malts shine through delicately hop-fizzed wheat undercurrent to form sweet buttery finish.
(ELLEZELLOISE) QUINTINE AMBREE
Thickly viscous cider-soured amber ale with fickle yeast clumps bidding candied butterscotch-toffee-ambrosia sweetness to herbal clove-spiced chicory-peppercorn stint. Maple-raisin confluence overrides phenol astringency and unresolved fruity frolic.
