On tap at Growler & Gill, impressive sour IPA dangles mildly tart peach-fuzzed strawberry adjunct and vanilla-creamed milk sugaring atop delicate flaked oats base. Pez-candied strawberry tartness and peachy lollipop dollop maintain slight sour edge knocked back a tad by sweet coconut shavings. Another finely tuned Hudson Valley sour ale.
ALLAGASH STARLING WIT
Swarming with frantic flavonoids, herbal-cologned lemon zesting receives coriander-spiced Curacao orange peel sweetness and white-peppered ginger adjunct, picking up ancillary basil, parsley and juniper licks over its white bread bottom. Despite pallid yellow cleared appearance, this one’s stylistically bold and ambitious.
FORGOTTEN BOARDWALK FLYING FORTRESS CREAM ALE
Straightforward dry-hopped cream ale lets Indian corned maize astringency gather pasty porridge-oated pilsner malts and mild honeysuckle herbage as slightly sour lemon fizz adds bubbly effervescence to moderate-bodied fare.
DROWNED LANDS TILTH SAUVIGNON BLANC SAISON
On tap at Ambulance, dry mixed culture Sauvignon Blanc-derived farmhouse ale aged in oak foeders retains leathery green grape esters. Lightly acidic white wining seeps into limey green apple, white peach, passionfruit and pomegranate souring.
THREE FLOYDS CHERRY CANUS INVERTUS FLEMISH RED ALE
On tap at Ambulance, lemon-fizzed sour cherry pucker sustains sharpness as mild lime-salted acidity and vinous oak tannins prop up sour edge of dryer than expected Flemish red ale.

CATSKILL FREAK TRACTOR SOUR (MODEL #14)
On tap at Seven Lakes Station, zesty grapefruit-peeled orange rind bittering gains mild white-peppered herbage, wavered piney respite and earthen barnyard desiccation over honeyed pale malts (for latent followup to 2015’s Model #1). Wispy brettanomyces yeast souring stays subtle despite wild ale styling.
SUN LAB EVERYTHING IS SURREAL SOUR ALE
On tap at Ambulance, sour lemon-candied Pez tartness rallies round cinnamon-spiced vanilla sweetness, mild black currant bittering, strawberry rhubarb piquancy salted green grape pucker and oaken vanilla tannins to its sugary Graham Cracker spine for perplexingly offbeat gose-like abstrusity.
KCBC BUSHWICK ZOMBIE FRUITED SOUR
Arid carbolic nature sucks out some lemon-salted sour fruiting and dry Sangria appeasement of pallid sour ale. Leathery green grape esters and subtle blueberry-strawberry adjuncts flutter blandly.
KCBC FRUITBOT 7000 GOSE
On tap at Taphouse 15, ultra-tart pinkish amber gose plies sea-salted lime pucker to tart cherry-guava-passionfruit adjuncts and acidic white wine esters as mild strawberry, blueberry and cranberry souring persists.
ANCHOR STEAM MERRY CHRISTMAS – 2018
“Sumptuously smooth” 44th annual Xmas Ale may lack capacious distinction of some previous versions, but rounded chameleonic subtleties (though pallid in spots) never fail to engage. Over its peaty chocolate malting, wintry cinnamon-nutmeg-allspice seasoning sedately serenades delicate orange peel sweetness, restrained prune souring, tart raisin stint, wispy banana breading, salted pine nut pinch and mentholated eucalyptus whim.
CORE 3 BREWERY
CLAYTON, NEW JERSEY
Occupying a gold-bricked green-roofed lodge with a front patio, grassy side biergarten and three overhead doors, CORE 3 BREWERY came to fruition in the small Gloucester County borough of Clayton during summertime 2019.
Core 3’s exquisitely antiquated furnishings sit atop a wood-designed porcelain floor – including a loungy mantled fireplace section (with two green cushioned couches), historic latchkey barnyard door, Edison lights, exposed pipes, ancient candelabras and decorative boot cleaner.
As of my February ’21 visit, Core 3 was a two-barrel nanobrewery doing small batches of 30 gallons at a time. The windowed tanks currently take up a small space behind the bar.
Stylish maize-dried grassy-hopped herbage saddled muskily raw grained cream ale, The Road To Fislers Mill, weaving dehydrated orange tartness and recessive dark floral nuances thru the rustic finish.
Toasted amber graining and nutty cocoa tones picked up light nutmeg-cinnamon spicing for wintry pale ale, The Graceful Maiden, a ‘radiant holiday warmer.’
“Ethereal” East -West IPA marries Belgian witbier for The Ghost Machine White IPA, allowing mild coriander-spiced orange tang to scurry thru salty white-peppered Sauvignon grape esters and vodka-tinged alcohol ethers above flaked oats base.
Yellow grapefruit rind bittering and sour green grape esters contrasted creamy crystal malt sugaring for Nonesuch NEIPA, leaving mild floral herbage and tangy tangerine zest upon the back end.
Perky grapefruit zesting and tangy pineapple-orange drift gained dank pine-lacquered hop char and bark-dried remnant to stimulate Bristlecone Basil Imperial IPA.
Dark chocolate-chalked rye breading received black grape jam influx and mild cola nuttiness for Nevermore Black Saison, a dryer stylish choice.
Oat-sugared molasses draped cocoa-dried dark chocolate malting, mild tarry hop bittering and nutty undertones for The Barbaros Oat, a sturdy milk stout.
There were two nitro brews on hand this eve.
Caramelized rye malts draped dry black-peppered pumpernickel breading for nitrogenated rye ale, The Trestle, a ‘well polished’ easygoer.
Milk-sugared Kona coffee richness persuaded fudgy Madagascar vanilla sweetness to elevate ‘espresso’-like nitro porter, The Therapist & His Elixir, a fascinating nightcap.
(ALLTECH) KENTUCKY BOURBON BARREL PEPPERMINT PORTER
Perfect sweet-toothed peppermint patty-candied confection. Luxurious peppermint-spiced dark chocolate resilience remains richly creamed in effervescently clean setting. Chocolate mint continuance picks up fudgy toffee sweetness to further impress.
